NASA Selects LIFEPAK® 1000 Defibrillator from Physio-Control as First Automated External Defibrillator in Space

LIFEPAK 1000 Defibrillator Deployed on International Space Station in July 2008

REDMOND, WASH. – August 13, 2008 – Physio-Control of Redmond, Wash., today announced the LIFEPAK 1000 defibrillator has been deployed on the International Space Station (ISS) as the first automated external defibrillator (AED) in space. AEDs are easy to use devices that automatically interpret a patient’s heart rhythm and, if necessary, deliver a potentially lifesaving defibrillation shock. They have become common in places such as airplanes, health clubs, and schools and now the LIFEPAK 1000 AED will be available for NASA crew members should someone experience sudden cardiac arrest in space.

The ISS has utilized manual defibrillators in the past, but NASA decided to now deploy an AED because it requires less training and maintenance, better enabling astronauts to respond to a medical emergency. The small size and light weight of the 1000 also helped minimize hardware mass and volume onboard the Space Station.

NASA conducted extensive evaluations of 18 AEDs available worldwide before selecting the LIFEPAK 1000 defibrillator to protect the crew members of the ISS. The AED evaluations focused on user interface, ease of use, durability and detailed technical specifications related to the unique conditions encountered in space, including electromagnetic interference, pressure susceptibility, temperature, vibration, acceleration and other environmental factors. Additionally, Medical Operations personnel evaluated the use of LIFEPAK 1000 in zero gravity conditions aboard a NASA DC-9 test aircraft as part of developing their advanced life support use protocols.

With the exception of a customized battery developed and provided by Micro Power Electronics, a leading manufacturer of custom batteries and power systems, and a NASA-created cover for the device that is specifically designed for space use to help protect it from electromagnetic interference, the LIFEPAK 1000 was deployed on board the Space Station in the same device configuration used by professional emergency responders.

About Sudden Cardiac Arrest and the LIFEPAK 1000 Defibrillator Sudden cardiac arrest happens suddenly and without warning, and is commonly caused by an electrical disturbance in the heart that causes an individual to go into an abnormal heart rhythm known as ventricular fibrillation, losing a pulse and consciousness. Immediate CPR and defibrillation are critical to survival, as survival rates drop about 10 percent every minute without defibrillation.

Available from Physio-Control since 2006, the LIFEPAK 1000 defibrillator is an AED created for use by basic life support responders to treat cardiac arrest patients. The 1000can also be programmed so those with more advanced training can view the three-lead ECG onscreen to provide continuous cardiac monitoring. The 1000 provides escalating biphasic energy up to 360 joules.

Born to Be a Tester

I have been working as a tester at GlobalLogic since 09-Oct-2006 and do the same currently. What I did before and how it happened I am at GlobalLogic – the story ahead is about.

Originally I come from Mykolaiv, Ukraine. It was the place I finished secondary school, graduated from university, and gained my first professional experience.

I discovered semi-“catch 22”, when I tried to find a job in IT sphere being a student at university. It was “catch 22” because experience is required to get a job, and job is required to gain an experience. The “catch 22” was just “semi-”, because the way out was there. I found an opportunity of an internship at local PC store. I made computer assemblings and installed software. So, I worked several hours a week till the day I was proposed a job at local TV channel as a video engineer. I shot, captured, and edited films for commercial projects.

I graduated from university and it was decided to move to Kharkiv (my girl-friend was proposed a job there at Procter & Gamble company). I began to look for a position of Software Tester even though I had no experience in testing. The company I liked kept silent, that was Validio. Another opportunity was a position of Shop Assistant at Unitrade stores network in portable equipment department, and I filled that vacancy. The next step towards testing was a job proposal from Systems Online company to take a position of Software Tester. Basically I performed automation testing. It was the time I gained great experience in software testing. Finally I took part in IT-Contest held by Validio company and received invitation for an interview. Thus I succeeded to hunt the company I dreamed about, and I was hired to work as a Software Tester. I worked for projects of Medtronic company, with their automated external defibrillators. I was completely satisfied with the job I had.

“All flows and all passes” - remember, my girl-friend, so, she was proposed a relocation to Kyiv. Nice, pretty nice! Job hunting just began. I updated my resume and started Kyiv’s IT labor-market investigation. I arranged most of interviews beforehand; and after move to Kyiv I spent 2 weeks to visit employers having 2-3 interviews a day. Thus, I was interviewed at 11 companies, totally about 17 interviews. The result was 5 job propositions.

I decided to work at GlobalLogic. Actually, it was the first employer, who responded to my resume, the first at that time, who interviewed me, and who made a proposal. All other interviews were just because I had to be sure I would occupy right position, at right company, with friendly co-workers, with right prospects, and with room for professional and personal growth. Here I am, at GlobalLogic! I believe, that I will be only more and more sure of right choice of mine, as I am sure now.
